The Prasat is situated on a small 200 meter tall hill in Baan Ta Pek in Buri Ram Province, Thailand. The front of the building facing the Dong Rak Mountains bordered with Cambodia. It was built over a long period of time. Three of its brick prangs dated from the early 10th century, while the main sanctuary was started in the 11th century but was never completed. The temple has since been restored by the Fine Arts Department with the help of several French experts, and with the same techniques as those used at Phimai. An impressive avenue built by Jayavarman VII, 600 feet long and 36 feet wide, leads to the main building with series of terraces, the lowest of which has a balustrade of mythical sacred serpents, naga. Situated on an east-west axis, the main sanctuary consists of a prang on a square base with antechambers at the four compass points, the main entrance facing east. Beautifully carved lintels adorn the doorways. There are fine quality friezes on the walls and columns. In the early 1960’s one of Prasat Phanon Rung’s most beautiful lintels disappeared only to resurface 25 years later in the collection of Boston Museum in the United States. After some negotiations, the museum agreed to return the piece, which has now been restored to its proper place over one of the temple doorways. Every year 4 times a year, the sun rise and set can be seen through all 15 door ways of the compound.
